Context

This project is a collaborative effort of the XR Team of WashU Robotics Club. I worked on the art direction, preparing the campus model, UX & prototyping in Unity. Read this article by Matthew if you’d like to learn more about how we built it with the help of ChatGPT.

Aiming to deliver an AR app to the App Store that enriches WashU students’ campus life, we landed on the idea of seeing campus in AR since we all had memories of struggling to find a building on our beautiful yet hilly campus.

Many buildings have similar names.

I'm a freshman studying Computer Science at WashU. This semester, I have a class in the Cupples II building. I'm aware it's located on the eastern part of campus, but I don't know the precise location. I frequently confuse Cupples Hall I with Cupples Hall II.

Existing Solutions

Third Party Maps

  • Some buildings are missing

  • No information about what the building is for

Course Schedule with Map on WebSTAC (Student Portal)

  • Not interactive

  • Not designed for mobile

  • Missing information for new buildings

Map on WashU Mobile App

  • Takes a long time to load

  • Hard to visualize where the building is in real life

How Might We

design the most accurate & comprehensive navigation of WashU's camps?
Our Approach
  • Interactive AR campus with realistic satellite models

  • Searchable buildings with up to date information

  • Descriptions of the buildings about their function and history

Target Users
  • New students who want to explore the campus

  • Current students who want to find a particular building

  • Visitors who want to learn something cool about each building

User Flow

Prototyping

  • Model Preparation

We used RenderDoc to pull the area from Google Maps. We imported it to Blender to cut out the campus model from the map.

  • Development in Unity
  • App Prototype

Usability Testing

We conducted an internal usability test among club members and learned that a tutorial is needed to guide first-time users who are unfamiliar with AR.
